Lwówek Śląski – the defense walls with bastle houses and towers

The defense walls of Lwówek Śląski were preserved almost in their entire circumference. They were erected in two phases. The first one began before 1261 and lasted until about 1301, when the inner ring was constructed. In the second phase (between approximately 1435 and 1494), the outer ring was built. Three gates lead to the town at that time: Lubańska Gate, the Złotoryjska Gate and the Bolesławiecka Gate. In the mid-16th century, the walls were rebuilt, and in 1643 they were partly destroyed. They were adapted for military purposes during the Silesian Wars. In the 19th century they were gradually dismantled, and between 1934 and 1935 they were reconstructed. The inner ring of the wall has 23 rectangular half-shell towers, 15 of which have been preserved until today. In the inner ring, 11 semicircular bastle houses were built.

Until today, the Lubańska gate has been preserved along with the tower whose functions have changed over the years. In the 17th century, it served as a prison. From the times of the Seven Years’ War, gunpowder for the local garrison was stored in the tower. Between 1744 and 1793, the municipal authorities ordered the placing of boards on the walls with names of the inns that could accommodate visitors. In 1809, the passage under the tower was closed, and a new road was marked next to it. In 1925, a youth hostel was organised in the tower, and in 1946 valuable collections evacuated by the Germans as they retreated were located there (among them were books from the university library in Wrocław).

North of the Lubańska gate, a fragment of the wall with a wooden porch was rebuilt between 1934 and 1935.
