The castle in Wleń is one of the most important strongholds in Silesia. It was erected in the second half of the 12th century by duke Boleslaus I the Tall. The well-preserved characteristic defensive tower dates from this period. Later owners - duke Henry I the Bearded together with his spouse Hedwig - founded a castle chapel. Their successor, duke Henry II the Pious, perished in 1241 in the battle of Legnica, fighting against the Mongols. Later on, the castle was inherited by his son Boleslaus II the Horned. He held there as prisoners, first, bishop Thomas of Wrocław, and later, his own nephew, the duke of Wrocław, Henry IV Probus.

The next owner was the Zedlitz family. They came into possession of the castle in 1368, as it was given in pawn by duchess Agness, the widow of Bolko II. Afterwards the castle was owned by a knight from Wrocław, Tymo von Kolditz. During that time, in 1428, the fortress was besieged by Hussite soldiers. In 1465 it returned to the Zedlitz family.

After being acquired by Sebastian von Zedlitz, the fortress was extended. In 1567-1574 the walls of the castle were heightened and a 2-kilometer long waterstrough was built to carry water from the nearby Wietrznica hill. In 1581 the castle changed its ownership to Sebastian Schaffgotsch, but after another twenty years it came back to the Zedlitz family. The new owner was Conrad von Zedlitz, who was widely-known for having the tendency to brush with the law. He was renowned for capturing a mayor, whom he released only after receiving a ransom.

During the Thirty Years’ War the castle was besieged and changed hands over and over again. The structure was severely damaged during the ongoing warfare - it was set on fire and blown up by the soldiers of the emperor in 1646. The building has never been restored to its former glory. Its next resident, a French colonel called Adam von Kaulhouse, focused on his vision of romantic ruins instead of dedicating himself to the restoration of the old castle. In 1662 he built a church of Saint Hedwig and a Baroque palace with a garden full of rare species of plants and sculptures.

At present the ruins are located within the forest sanctuary ‘Góra Zamkowa’ (‘Castle Mountain’). They are in bad condition and in danger of collapse. Due to this fact entrance is not permitted.
