Walim Grodno Castle

Grodno Castle in situated on Choina Mountain (450 m above sea level), above the crucial valley of Bystrzyca (today there is an artificial Bystrzyckie Lake by the castle). The castle is situated in a unique surroundings, it is beautifully decorated and impress all. The castle initially served to patrol the Silesia-Bohemian route. The earliest mention of it comes from 1315. In the 14th century, when duke Bolko II was the ruler, the fortress was extended and became a property of the Schoff family. Nevertheless, duchess Agnes, widow of Bolko II, visited the castle very often.

In the 15th century it was owned by several families, the Mühlheim, the Czetritzs, the Hobergs and the Lugaus among others. Some of them resorted to robbery. The Lugaus remodelled the building in a Renaissance manner between 1545 and 1587; the effects of this alteration are evident to this day (ornate portals and sgraffito). In 1599 the castle was taken over by Moldavian hospodar Michał Waleczny, but he never lived there, as a result of a loss at war and an early death. In 1601 it was besieged by rebellious local peasants; during the Thirty Years’ War Swedish soldiers looted the place and, finally, in 1689 it was consumed by fire.

In 1774 it began gradually collapsing. Between 1823 and 1829, thanks to the initiative of a renowned Silesian historian, Johann G. Büsching, reconstruction was initiated. It was further restored in the second half of the 19th century (amongst other things the sgraffito was renovated) and a restaurant was installed in the castle. With the support of local tourist organizations the next owners of the castle, the Zedlitzs, opened it to the public. After 1945 the castle was nationalized, and the former name, Kynsburg, was changed to a non-historical Grodno. Over the next few decades the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society  was in charge of it. Since 2009 the Walim commune has been its administrator.

The stone fortress has an irregular and oblong plan, well-adjusted to the conditions of the terrain. It consists of an upper castle with a high tower (providing a breathtaking panoramic view), a three-winged building with a yard and a lower castle, the former administrative bailey. The lower castle is composed of a yard surrounded by walls with fortified towers and a gatehouse with richly ornate sgraffito,. The decoration refers to the art of the Prague court of the king of Bohemia and emperor Rudolf II. The part of the castle used as a museum (it offers tours with or without a guide) is situated in the upper castle and contains a modest collection of paintings, furnishing (replicas), items of artistic crafts (mainly armour) and models of war engines.

A small wildlife sanctuary, Choina Mountain, surrounds the castle. A rocky path leads from the centre of Zagórze Śląskie to the castle which is impossible to reach by car. The path is marked with green colour. It takes 15 minutes to get there on foot.
