Strzelin – the former Royal Court (“Sąd Królewski”), the so called House of the Dukes of Brieg (“Dom Książąt Brzeskich”), 1 Książąt Brzeskich street

The construction of a Renaissance mansion called the House of the Dukes of Brieg (“Dom Książąt Brzeskich”, former: Strehlen) was completed in 1606. It was designed by H. Lukas, an architect of Charles II, duke of Ziębice. The residence was built at the initiative of Joachim Frederick, duke of Liegnitz-Brieg due to the collapse of the old ducal castle. It was a two-storey, two-bay building with a Baroque portal placed on the north side and a semi-circular bay window supported on stone cantilevers. It was covered with a gabled roof with mannerist tops and façades, decorated with sgraffitoes. Over the years the building was renovated several times. In 1675, after the death of George William, duke of Liegnitz – the last of the Piast dukes – the building passed into the hands of the Czech king (who was also the emperor). Various institutions were located in the former residence, among others: the district court and the Internal Revenue Service. The site was damaged by a fire during the battle of Strzelin in 1945, but at the end of the century it was completely renovated. It is interesting that during the Napoleonic wars a meeting between emperor Alexander I of Russia and Frederick William III, king of Prussia was held in the House of the Dukes of Brieg.

The mansion belongs to the State Treasury. Today, as a result of several renovation projects, it is in good condition. It is a two-story building, covered with a gabled roof with large dormers. The House of the Dukes of Brieg is one of the most interesting monuments in Strzelin. It is not open to tourists. There are plans to create a conference-hotel facility there or the headquarters of the county offices.
