Niemcza – a castle, not in use today

Niemcza Castle (former name: Nimptch) was built in the 14th century at the initiative of Bolko I, duke of Świdnica, on the site of an earlier grad (a medieval settlement; its fragments were discovered by archeologists in 1950 and 1958). In 1331 the fortress belonged to the dukes of Brieg. Between 1429 and 1434 it was controlled by the Hussite troops, who did severe damage to it. The castle was rebuilt in the second half of the 15th century by Frederick I, duke of Liegnitz and Brieg. The castle was restored to its original splendour thanks to George II, duke of Brieg, who initiated its rebuilding in 1586. The Renaissance residence was built to a design by Hans Lugan, an architect. The regular, multi-winged shape of the structure was then repeatedly changed over the years as a result of fires and repairs. The site was damaged during the Thirty Years’ War (it was captured in 1633). In 1735 the building was partially destroyed by fire. From that moment on it remained in disuse for 100 years. Its 16th century shape was finally lost between 1834 and 1927, when the building was converted into warehouses. After World War II the building housed clothing factories. In 1964 the Baroque chapel of St. Hedwig, built between 1712 and 1724, was demolished due to subsidence. Only the northern and the western wings have survived to this day. Portals from 1737 have been preserved in the western wing. The courtyard is surrounded by two-tier buildings. The castle is privately owned today and has been renovated.
