Międzylesie – a castle-palace complex, palace gardens and a palace park

In the north-western part of the market square in Międzylesie there is one of the largest castle-palace complexes in Lower Silesia. It consists of: a knights’ castle, built probably in the 14th century and a Baroque palace dated back to the 17th century. Next to the palace there is a garden from the 18th century. From the original Gothic castle, built in the 14th century and owned by the Glaubitz knight family, only a tower survived the Hussite attack in 1428; it was later called the Black Tower (Czarna Wieża). In 1580, on the site of the castle ruins, a ten-year long construction of a Renaissance manor began. It was commissioned by the great Tschirnhaus knight family. An irregular, two-wing structure with a small courtyard was built. The other two wings, the southern and the eastern one, were built between 1614 and 1622. On the first floor of the castle there is a corridor leading to one wing of the palace. The estate was looted by the Swedish and later on purchased by an Austrian count, Michael Ferdinand von Althann. The count brought an Italian architect, Jacobo Carove, to design the Baroque-style palace wings, a new courtyard and a wall surrounding the complex (all of which were constructed after 1695). In the chronicles of the town there is a legend connected with one of the later owners of the estate, Michael Wenzel II (1686 - 1737) and his wife; it is also represented in the fresco placed in the chancel of the Church of Corpus Christi situated next to the castle. The legend has it that the ghost of Julianna, Michael Wenzel II’s prematurely dead wife and mother of his three children, roams the current Powstańców Śląskich street. In 1707, in order to commemorate his beloved wife Wenzel, the bereaved widower, called this street “Julianna’s alley”. The fresco in the church depicts Julianna on her deathbed saying goodbye to her family. The castle was renovated in the 19th century. Although during the attack of the Soviet Army in 1945 the site was not severely damaged, the contents were looted. In 1950 the building became the property of the State Treasury and was converted into a holiday centre. In 1972 a part of the castle burned down after it was struck by lightning (the same happened in 1540 when the town was on fire). After another renovation, the site passed into the hands of the Central Heating Plant in Katowice and the Polish Shipping Co. Between 2008 and 2009 the building was renovated by the new owner. Today the site is private property and is gradually being restored to its former glory. It is owned by Jacek Cząstkiewicz. The southern, Baroque-style wing houses a hotel, a restaurant and some conference rooms.  There are plans to adapt larger parts of the castle-palace complex.
