Jelenia Góra – Czarne

The early-Renaissance mansion, as we know it today, was probably built on the site of a former fortress. The construction of the Czarne manor was initiated by Kasper Schaffgotsch in 1559. A stone, two-storey structure with an inner courtyard, defensive walls and a tower was built; it was surrounded by a moat. The estate became the property of Gregorius von Kahlen in 1584. The next owners were, successively, Ernst von Nimptsch and Friedrich von Nimptsch (from 1606) who expanded the mansion after a fire in 1623, retaining its Renaissance character. In 1679 the village along with the estate was purchased by the town of Jelenia Góra. In 1713 the manor was partly destroyed by another fire. During the renovation, a building “balancing” the one on the western wing was added to the eastern wing; the tower was topped with a Baroque dome. During the modernization in 1885 the eastern wing and the perimeter walls were demolished. The building was covered with a pitched roof which has survived to this day.

After the war, when the building was converted to state farms, it began to slowly fall into disrepair. Between 1983 and 1987 some basic security work was conducted, but only in the period 1999 - 2002 did comprehensive repairs and conservation, funded by the Phare fund from the European Union take place on the site.

The tower with loopholes, located inside the palace in one corner of the building, carved wooden ceilings and, to some extent, the Renaissance paintings on the walls have survived to this day in quite good condition. Some of the chambers are also in fairly good condition.

Today the Czarne manor houses the headquarters of the Foundation for Ecological Culture. It was established in 1991 and deals with organizing educational campaigns, workshops and festivals on the site. Performances and academic lectures are held there as well. The building also houses a restaurant with homarium (this is the third, after Krakow and Warsaw, such place in Poland), a conference room and a banquet room.
